Second Graders can Make A Difference!
On a windy, cold day 6 Second Graders set out with the Canal View Service Learning Club to honor several veterans living in our community. It all started with a few students wanting to give back to our community. After several attempts at creating a community service project, they landed with the Service Learning Club. This group of 4th and 5th Graders welcomed our 2nd Graders to work with them on a project. The group met several times to create signs and gifts for the Veterans. The also prepared songs and poems to recite for the Veterans upon their visit.
Great Job to those who made a difference by giving a special thank you to those who served our country.

A visit from the author Tedd Arnold
Canal View was very lucky to have a visit from the author Tedd Arnold. The Canal View Parent Association supported the efforts to bring him to our school community. The excitement began to build weeks before his arrival as we read his books, visited his website and began to form questions we wanted to ask him.
It was truly a learning experience for all. You will find enclosed small clips of everyone sharing their favorite part after Tedd Arnold's presentation.

The Great Poem Race
How can you improve your fluency? How can you become a better reader? How can you better understand what you read?
Each week we start a new race. Just read the poem to as many people as you can and you could be the winner.
You can read to: Mom, Dad, friends on the bus, friends at school, teachers at school, family and neighbors. You can even call friends or family on the phone! If you read to at least 10 people you can be in the "10 and Up Club!"

We packed our suitcase for October!
The month of October we traveled to Australia to meet Mem Fox! We enjoyed several of her books!
At her website, we got to listen to her read our favorites! One interesting fact we learned was that Mem was not her original name. She didn't like her name and changed it when she was young. She has kept Mem ever since.
Where will we go in November?

It's Not Magic!
This week we learned about Physical Changes. A physical change can affect the size, shape or color of a substance. We started out with BTB mixed with water. No we are not drinking it! We are mixing in Carbon Dioxide or the air we breath out. It turned GREEN!
When we added a mixture of vinegar and water it turned yellow!
Finally, we added water and baking soda and it turned back to BLUE!

Canal View Open House / Curriculum Night
Thursday Evening from 6pm-7:30pm is Canal View's Open House / Curriculum Night.
Please bring your child to visit the school and view what we have been working on since school began.
We are also conducting "Parent University." Teachers have volunteered to conduct small sessions on different topics to help educate parents on items that involve their child's education.
I am teaching a class on "How to read aloud with your child." This will be held from 6:35pm-6:55pm in the library. Please feel free to attend.
I will not be in my classroom at that time, but you are still welcome to visit the classroom. I have arranged another faculty member to be in the classroom while I teach at the "Parent University."
I hope you can stop in to view all the exciting things we have been working on.

What is a scientist?
Our first science unit is discussing the scientific method. We all realized that we already think like scientists!
Who Will We Visit Next?
The anticipation builds as I bring the old suitcase to the carpet. Revealed inside is an author we will get to know. This month it is Kevin Henkes! Several books he has written are packed in the suitcase, waiting for us to read.

Does the shoe fit?
Selecting a book that is "just right" for young readers is not easy. Using shoes gave us the perfect connection. This week we used shoes to show how one book does not fit everyone. In addition, your interests reflect the type of shoes you have in your closet. When we choose a book there is so much to think about first!

Our Class Promise
The first few weeks are so much about creating a learning community. We spent several days working on our class promise. After reading several books, we identified rules we would like for our classroom. Each student then picked one rule that they wanted to work extra hard on this year. The results were wonderful!

First Week Of Second Grade
We had a great time meeting new friends! To help easy our nerves we read First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg and then enjoyed some "Jitter Juice" to chase away the butterflies. We also shared our favorite book with a buddy. Preview the slide show for close up moments.

Starting a new year!
The feeling is bitter sweet as we approach the end of summer and I begin to prepare for a new arrival of students. Unlocking the empty classroom is no fun. With coffee and new packages from Target, I face the challenge of unpacking, rearranging and designing the perfect spot for the next 10 months. Here is where I start:
