Science with Marshmallows and Toothpicks
This week we learned that matter is made up of small particles put together. We put this idea into practice by building a tower out of marshmallows and toothpicks. The group work had several tasks to accomplish. 1. Build a tower 30 centimeters tall. 2. The tower had to stand for 15 seconds.
An Author Visit
James Bruchac, a children's author, came to tell us several stories this past week. He is a wonderful storyteller that entertained us all! Don't miss the video at the end.
Science with Balloons
Learning about matter is always fun. We had 6 balloons filled with different kinds of matter. We worked in groups and had to decide if there was a solid or a liquid inside the balloon. Then we had to write words that described the mystery object's properties.
A Special Surprise
We had a surprise visitor for a special birthday girl. Mrs. Lotta came to read a book and then donated it to our class!
Our New Vice Principal
Mrs. McCarthy, our new part-time Vice-Principal came to read to our class. We were reading books that would help us see what a personal narrative was. We were soon going to be writing our own personal narrative. Reading mentor texts helps us get ready to jump into this type of writing on our own. Mrs. McCarthy read A Chair For My Mother by Vera B. Williams.
Writing Partners
In early October many students met with their writing partners to share what they have been working on in writing. As part of the editing and revising process in writing we often stop and share our writing. This extra glance over usually helps with identifying errors and feedback from our writing partner helps too!

Applesauce Pictures
Enjoy the smiles we had while making applesauce. We also met with Mrs. Marsh's friends to learn about 4 personal safety rules. Finally, we learned about the writing process by using play-dough. We brainstormed our creation, drafted it, revised and edited it, then finally published it. We will be doing this with our writing.
